How to Prepare a Child to Say Goodbye to a Pet
General communication ideas for families who already know a goodbye is approaching.
How can I prepare my child when our family already knows a goodbye is coming?
Begin before the final day if you can. You do not need to explain medical details. Focus on what the family knows, what the child can expect emotionally, and what they would like to say or make.
Start with your child’s age
Ages 4–6
Keep time descriptions immediate: “We may need to say goodbye soon.” Pair words with a simple activity, such as choosing a photo.
Ages 7–9
Invite the child to make a card, ask questions, or choose a favorite memory. Do not make participation a test of love.
Ages 10–12
Offer choices and privacy. A child may want to write something without reading it aloud.
A simple way forward
- 1
State only what your family already knows.
- 2
Ask how the child would like to say goodbye.
- 3
Offer two or three concrete choices.
- 4
Keep routines steady where possible.
